We had great pleasure in presenting our 2008 sale of Fine Stamps and Covers of the World, continuing the annual Rarities Sale concept, re-introduced to the Australian auction calendar by us in 2002. As in the past, this sale featured many wonderful items for the discerning philatelist. However, in a break with the past, more general single lots and collections were also included in this sale.
The sale commenced with a range of Literature, including auction catalogues. Australian Colonies featured many superb items from New South Wales, Tasmania and Victoria, including the award winning collection of the 1895 Havelock-Fosters Postcard formed by Ray Kelly. Australian Commonwealth featured 1911 Stamp Design Competition Essays, Kangaroo varieties, multiples and imprints in all watermarks, including the 1929 London U.P.U. folder with CTO values to £2, King George V 4d T.S. HARRISON imprint blocks, pre-decimal Plate Nos. and a strong section of Decimal errors, with several not seen on the market for many years.
Rest of the World featured fine British Empire in Africa, Falkland Islands, Great Britain including the QV £5 and the 1966 Technology 6d with Red Omitted used [one of two recorded], unique Nauru 1924 Ships Die Proofs, and fine New Guinea, New Zealand and Tonga postal history, including bisects.
