1902 (14 Jul) cover to 'Mrs MA Watson, Lavender Cottage, High Street, Ashby, Doncaster, Lincolnshire' with New South Wales ½d Green and 1d Shield x 5 (one with broken frame at top) tied by one almost fine the three characteristically indistinct strikes of 'NORFOLK ISLAND' cds (first type without 'NSW' at base), carried via Sydney with 'JY 24/02' transit and Doncaster 'SP 1/02' arrival backstamps, minor ageing marks. The rate was 2½d UPU foreign letter (the 2d per ½oz Empire letter rate was not extended to Great Britain until 1.4.1905). David Murray Brown states that the it that the item was carried by the Burns, Philp & Co. steamer 'Mambare' which had departed Sydney on 1.6.1902 on its service to the New Hebrides and was 5-6 days late calling at Norfolk Island, returning to Sydney on 24.7./1902
