The originals of these essays are in the Tapling Collection in the British Library. All other examples are thought to be reprints produced from the original plate by Van Dyck in the 1880s. 1849 1d Bright Red lithographed essay by Robert Clayton in the adopted design on thin (almost pelure) paper, small to good margins all round and very scarce. Approximately 20 examples are recorded of this essay, which suggests that one sheet was printed from a lithographic stone which may have been of the same layout (25 in 5 rows of 5) as was adopted for the issued stamp
