1856 (7 Feb) envelope from Sydney to Sandhurst, U.K. with 6d Greenish-grey Imperf diadem cancelled dumb obliterator, endorsed 'Per Hellespont via Southampton'. With handstruck '3' accountancy mark in red, manuscript '4' and circular 'MORE/TO/PAY' in black tying adhesive. The 'Hellespont' was a private ship which carried mail as far as Singapore to connect with the Far East P & O service. On arrival in London the G.P.O. added the 4d charge for the Far East leg of the journey, hence the 'MORE/TO/PAY handstamp and manuscript '4'. One of only two 'Hellespont' covers originating from N.S.W. and an important postal history item, ex Trevor Davis
