1902(?) Perkins, Bacon & Co. artist's handpainted stamp-size 1d essay showing King Edward VII, mounted in sunken frame (87 x 75mm) with Perkins, Bacon & Co. cachet on reverse. Perkins Bacon first made contact with the Australian Post Office in 1902, submitting two essays for a uniform issue. These were returned with the explanation that no uniform issue could be made at that time. However ,the firm subsequently re-submitted essays for the 1911 Stamp Design Competition. It is believed that this essay is one of those submitted in 1902. A highly significant essay from the 1901-12 period, superb and beautiful. BW E78, cat AU$6000
