General Sale No. 53 (11am, Lots 1001-1812) featured fine Australian Colonies stamps and postal history, with nearly 300 lots of New South Wales including a magnificent selection of the Diadem and 5/- Coin issues, supplemented by exceptional uses on cover; outstanding pre-stamp mail, including the famous 1836 Hassans Walls cover (offered publicly for the first time in over a generation), an 1838 cover with the unique ‘VIA/MUSCLEBROOK’ marking, and mail connected with Colonial personalities including Rev Samuel Marsden, Sir Thomas Mitchell, ‘Banjo’ Patterson, etc; and a significant collection of New South Wales TPO markings.
Queensland featured important registered covers from the Moreton Bay District, and Victoria included an impressive array of destination mail including a wonderful 1858 registered cover to the Italian States. Australian Commonwealth included a near-complete range of mint Kangaroo and Map stamps, with the £1 and £2 First Wmk punctured ‘OS’, plus an example of the Sperati forgery of the £2 value.
