Our first auction for 2010 commenced with collections and accumulations, followed by picture postcards, literature, medals and banknotes. Australian Colonies featured many fine items including New South Wales 1882-97 3d ‘Imperforate between’ in a block of eight, Queensland with a selection of Beer Duties, South Australia 1883 ½d Essay and later Plate Proofs, Tasmania Sideface Plate Proof blocks, 2/6d Tablet Essay with Plate No. and Postal Fiscals including 1863-80 10/- mint, 1900 2/6d block of four, and Platypus overprint varieties, Victoria with fine Half-Lengths, Queen-on-Throne issues including the original contract signed by James Campbell and James Fergusson, ‘STAMP STATUTE’ £5 Essay and 2/- on registered cover, KEVII £1 Die Proof, and in Western Australia a 1888 cover from Kojonup to Austria.
Australian Commonwealth featured collections, Kangaroo Issues including First Wmk 4d No Monogram block and 5/- corner pair showing ‘Double Print’, Second Wmk 9d Wmk Inverted, Third Wmk with the seldom seen 1929 U.P.U. souvenir folder and CofA Wmk ‘SPECIMEN’ blocks of four. The Engraved 6d Kookaburra on cover was another highlight, as well as King George V Die Proofs (3) and other varieties in positional pieces, including imprints. The 1927-65 issues featured Plate Nos. and First Day Covers including the 5/- Sydney Harbour Bridge, and a range of other issues included Decimal errors, Booklets, Postage Dues to 10/- with scarce multiples and imprints, Stationery, Postal History including Military Mail, and Aerophilately.
The Pacific and Oceania area was also well covered, with ranges of Nauru, New Guinea, New Zealand Beer Duty Stamps, Papua New Guinea Proofs and in Samoa a 1912 postcard carried by Zeppelin in Germany and then by surface mail to Apia. Rest of the World included a Bradbury Wilkinson card bearing nine different Plate Proofs, ranges of British Africa, West Indies and Asia proofs and covers, a nice section of Great Britain including 1d blacks, and South West Africa Postage Due varieties. |
