We were honoured to offer The ‘Pericles’ Collection (Lots 515-709), formed by one of the finest students of Australian Commonwealth philately during the past 50 years. This was undoubtedly the best holding of its type to appear in the market for a generation, and was noteworthy for the extensive range of rare plate numbers, many of which have not been on the market for 30 years. We were privileged to offer the collection of Australian Specimen and UPU Stamps formed by the late William (Bill) McCredie (Lots 227-339). While not as comprehensive as his Australian Colonies Specimens sold by us in June 2011, this collection was still remarkable for its range of unusual material. The sale also featured a fine range of Australian Commonwealth, with mint Kangaroos to £2 in all watermarks and the 10/- CofA Wmk overprinted ‘SPECIMEN’ Type C1 variant, better King George V Sideface selections, with 1d Red shades and varieties, as well as the very distinctive CofA Wmk 1/4d ‘Deep Turquoise’, pre-decimal First Day Covers with the previously unrecorded 2/- Maroon Kangaroo re-drawn die, and postage dues; while the diverse Oceania region featured good selections of New Guinea and New Zealand.
