    John Mitchell: Pen and ink drawing denominated 4d, the design coincidentally incorporating \\\'emblematic\\\' elements rather similar to those in the successful design by Samuel Calvert. Ex Rundell, Purves, Perry. Illustrated Kellow page 108

    Cyrus Mason: Handpainted in blue on card, based upon the contemporary Van Diemen\\\'s Land 4d, re-affixed to its rightful position on original tender document (which appeared on the market only in 1993). In the document, Mason signed as successor to Thomas Ham (who engraved and printed the earlier \\\'Half-length\\\' and \\\'Queen-on-Throne\\\' stamps of Victoria). Essay ex Rundell, Purves, Perry.     Estimate: $15,000 Realised Price : $11,500

    De Gruchy & Leigh: Engraved 4d denomination printed in black on thick glazed card, endorsed \\\'Design for Postage Stamps/by De Gruchy & Leigh/80 Flinders Lane East\\\', crease at left and pinholes where originally affixed to a document. Ex Rundell, Purves, Perry. Illustrated Kellow page 108

    Estimate: $8,000 Realised Price : $6,000

    Samuel Calvert: The unadopted Essay, modelled upon the British embossed series, in chestnut on wove paper endorsed \\\'Design for Fourpenny stamp/other colour not embossed/Calvert Brothers\\\'. The Royal Collection contains embossed Essays in this design, one in black and three in colourless relief. Creased, thin lower left, pinholes where originally affixed to a document. Ex Purves, Perry.     Samuel Calvert: The successful tender, an engraved, undenominated, printed incomplete Essay featuring Queen\\\'s head and \\\'emblematic\\\' designs, from which evolved the Philatelic moniker bestowed upon this stamp series. Reverse with pencilled manuscript \\\'Proposed stamp 1857\\\'. A similar Essay in a different shade is recorded. Ex Rundell, Purves, Perry. Illustrated Kellow colour plate 8

    Die Proofs: Original Die Proof for 1d in black on thin wove paper, stained at base. Two examples are recorded, the other being in The Royal Collection. Ex Yardley, Purves, Perry

    Estimate: $3,000 Realised Price : $2,300

    Die Proofs: c.1922 2d Posthumous proofs on glazed card-paper (115x145mm approx) in black, violet, turquoise or deep blue whilst in a defaced state (4). The only known proofs of 2d and the only set not substantially cut-down

    Estimate: $5,000 Realised Price : $3,800

    Plate Proofs: 1d in green on blue vertically laid paper, originally in a pair from the estate of John Calvert, the other now in The Royal Collection. Ex Yardley, Purves

     

    Lot 1330
    Estimate: $25,000 Realised Price : $40,000

    Plate Proofs: 2d in pale lilac on vertically laid paper, rouletted at top and at base, fine impression and delicate shade as in the original unwatermarked printings of Calvert\\\'s 2d (SG 45/a), remarkably POSTALLY USED together with issued 4d vertically laid paper and Half-length 3d bright blue (SG 68, 29) on 1858 (16 Oct) entire letter, adhesives tied by Barred Numeral \\\'1\\\', from Melbourne to U.K. per \\\'Victoria\\\', paying 9d rate via Marseilles. The 2d is believed to derive from a proof sheet which was subsequently rouletted and placed in to stock at Melbourne G.P.O. This is the only recorded example on or off cover. The pre-eminent \\\'Emblems\\\' cover. Ex Purves, Perry

    Plate Proofs: Make-ready proofs on unwatermarked, white wove paper for 4d comprising Setting I singles (2) in pale vermilion and rose-red (on bluish), and Setting II marginal block of six in rose-red, originally from the estate of John Calvert.
