Stone A: 2d purple (SG 36a) remarkable large-margined block of four [37-38/47-48] on 1856 (12 Apr) Official cover (a little stained at left) locally addressed at Melbourne and paid for extraordinary quadruple Town Letter rate, the block tied by filing pinhole (upper left unit) and 2mm punch hole, which extends through lower left unit and cover, these apparently related to Post Office handling, \\\'ADVERTISED/AND/ UNCLAIMED\\\' and rare oval \\\'T.C/AP 14/1856\\\' (in red) applied. Kellow records six blocks of four in the Campbell & Fergusson printings, this being the only example on cover. One of the most spectacular frankings of the \\\'Queen-on-Throne\\\' series. Ex Kellow

This extremely rare shade, similar to Ham\\\'s \\\'chestnut\\\' (SG 18a) and Campbell\\\'s \\\'black\\\' (SG 22a), is believed to be a proof/colour trial pressed in to postal use.
