Perhaps the finest of the five covers recorded bearing a pair of the original state 1d. Another cover from this correspondence, of slightly lesser quality, realised AU$41900+ in our March 2006 sale

    1d orange-brown, SG 1a, vertical pair, crease in lower unit, full-margined except where barely touched at right, affixed by locally applied gum and cancelled by Butterfly \\\'21\\\' on 1850 (12 Jun) cover Ballan to Sydney, paying 2d Inland Letter rate, fine Ballan datestamp on reverse. Five covers are recorded bearing a pair of the original state 1d. Ex Wawn, Perry

    1d dull chocolate-brown, SG 1b, full-margined, one of the finest examples of this shade extant. A far rarer shade in comparison with orange-brown than catalogue differential would suggest. Ex Perry

One of the more attractive of the small number of solo-franked first printing 3d covers

    3d bright blue, SG 4, in combination with second printing 3d Blue, eighth printing 2d cinnamon and fourth printing 2d grey (SG 4a, 17 and 10), cancelled Butterfly \\\'23\\\' on 1851 (18 Jan) cover Burn Bank to U.K., paying 10d double Inland/Ship Letter rates. Rated by Perry as one of the most remarkable frankings in the Ham printing \\\'Half-lengths\\\'. Ex Caspary, Forster, Perry. Illustrated Kellow colour plate 3

    3d blue, SG 4a, unused part o.g. strip of three, thinnings and tears, although the record unused multiple in private hands (The Royal Collection contains a rejoined block of four). Ex Pack, Wawn, Perry

    3d blue retouched, SG 4ac, [10] retouch below \\\'V\\\' and in border beside elbow at right, large margins except where barely touched upper right, in combination with third printing 1d dull orange-vermilion, (SG 8 - two singles, one creased), tied by Butterfly \\\'15\\\' to 1851 (5 Apr) cover Geelong to U.K. per \\\'Lochnagar\\\', paying 5d Inland/Ship Letter rates. The [10] retouch occurred only once in the sheet of 120, whereas the [11] (SG 4ab) appeared eight times. The only example of a [10] retouch on cover and one of the more attractive Ham printing Half-length covers. Ex Purves, Perry
