SPECIMEN STAMPS OF THE AUSTRALIAN COLONIES, VICTORIA, 1891 REPRINTS

    Lot 461
    Estimate: $1,250 Realised Price : $1,800

The complete set of 48 optd ‘Reprint’ plus three extras (two shades each of the 1d and 6d Queen-on-Throne, and the £5 Stamp Statute ‘REPRINT’ overprint). Generally fine and rarely offered as a complete set, as the Stamp Statutes were printed in half the quantity of the Postage values (51)

In 1891 the Victorian Post Office reprinted 48 obsolete stamps on V over Crown paper, using in a few cases the existing plates, but otherwise from new printing plates derived from the original dies. These reprints were intended for distribution to U.P.U. members, for which purpose they were overprinted ‘Reprint’. Sets were later placed on sale to collectors, and following Federation the remaining stocks were cancelled-to-order for presentation purposes

    Lot 462
    Estimate: $500 Realised Price : $380

‘Mint’ examples of the 3d Laureate (matched with used original, and reprint optd ‘Reprint’) and 2/- Stamp Statute. Both large part o.g. and rare, 3d with 2003 Ceremuga Certificate (4)

The reprints in ‘mint’ condition are very rare and were probably used for special presentations. It is doubtful if a complete set exists in private hands

    Lot 463
    Estimate: $1,000 Realised Price : $750

Optd ‘Reprint’ plus Type 21a italic ‘Specimen’, comprising 1d and 6d Queen-on-Thrones (imperforate), 2d Queen-on-Throne (perforated) and 9d Bell Design. Some traces of gum on the first three, and adhesions due to previous affixing. 6d touched at left and 2d thinned, still a very rare quartet (4)

The reprints with additional ‘Specimen’ overprint were probably prepared for a special presentation. No complete set exits, and only single examples are recorded of the known values, so it is possible only a single set was ever prepared

    Lot 464
    Estimate: $120 Realised Price : $90

Optd ‘Reprint’ scratched out with ‘SPECIMEN’ puncture added, 1d Pale Bistre large Stamp Duty. Defect caused by removal of ‘reprint’, otherwise fine large part o.g.

This stamp, and that in the following lot, are believed to be specimen stamps sent to a U.P.U. member country, where the defacement was officially performed and the receiving puncture added. Other than these two stamps, only one other (1d Stamp Statute) is recorded
