    SPECIMEN STAMPS OF THE AUSTRALIAN COLONIES, SOUTH AUSTRALIA, REPRINTS

    Lot 203
    Estimate: $500 Realised Price : $625

    1884 Printed Sheet headed ‘REPRINTS/OF/SOUTH AUSTRALIAN POSTAGE STAMPS,/ WITH THE DATE OF ISSUE.’ with printed spaces for 30 different reprints all optd ‘REPRINT’, plus 6d Perkins Bacon ultramarine opt. ‘SPECIMEN’, showing ‘500 - 23-4-84’ imprint at lower left

    In 1884 a wide range of earlier Perkins Bacon and De La Rue issues were reprinted on Watermark Crown over SA (wide) paper. These were printed in various shades and either left imperforate, or rouletted or perforated to match the earlier issues. These stamps were all overprinted ‘REPRINT’ with the exception of the 6d Perkins Bacon printed in ultramarine, which was overprinted SPECIMEN Type 5

    1891 Printed Sheet headed ‘REPRINTS AND SPECIMENS/OF/SOUTH AUSTRALIAN POSTAGE AND REVENUE STAMPS,/ WITH THE DATE OF ISSUE.’ with printed spaces for 45 stamps, filled with all different selection (incl 1/- violet) optd ‘REPRINT’ (35) or ‘SPECIMEN’ (10) trimmed close and few stamps with faults

    In 1891 a second printed sheet was prepared, this one bearing 45 stamps comprising 35 reprints and 10 current stamps with Type 5 SPECIMEN overprint. This sheet was distributed to U.P.U. members in August 1889, and was also was bound into the Proceedings of the Postal and Telegraph Conference held in Adelaide in May 1890

    1884 Reprints of De La Rue designs, comprising ½d on 1d Green (2, Perf 10 with ‘REPRINT’ in red, and Perf 11½-12½ with ‘REPRINT’ in black), ½d Chocolate, 1d Green, and 2d Orange (4, including pair), part o.g. (8)

    1884 Reprints Perkins Bacon 1d comprising imperforate in Dark Green (5, including a strip of 3), rouletted in Yellow-Green (4 including a pair) and perforated in Deep Yellow-Green (2), most part o.g. (11)

    1884 Reprints Perkins Bacon 4d comprising rouletted in Purple-Black, Dull Violet, and Deep Lilac (3, including pair), and perforated in Dull Purple (3, including pair), Deep Mauve (3, including pair), Plum, and Reddish-Purple (5), most part o.g. (13)

    1884 Reprints Perkins Bacon 6d comprising imperforate in Deep Slate-Blue (4, including a pair) and Grey-Blue blocks of 4 (2), rouletted in Grey-Blue (4, including a pair), and Greenish-Blue (4, including a pair), and perforated in Pale Blue, Pale Bright Blue pair, Bright blue, and Prussian Blue (2). Also Ultramarine block of 8 and single optd Type 5 ‘SPECIMEN’. Some faults but a comprehensive group, some part o.g. (35)

    1884 Reprints Perkins Bacon 8d on 9d perforated in Light Brown (3, including a pair), Grey-Brown (2), Burnt Umber pair, and Brown-Orange (2), and 9d rouletted in Grey-Lilac (4, including a pair), and perforated in Dull Claret (2), most part o.g. (15)

     

    Lot 212
    Estimate: $750 Realised Price : $575

    1884 Reprints Perkins Bacon 8d on 9d imperforate block of 50 in Light Brown, weak ‘8 PENCE’ surcharge in black, and normal strength ‘TEN PENCE’ surcharge in blue. Very unusual and possibly of proof status, fine without gum

     

    Lot 213
    Estimate: $250 Realised Price : $260

    1884 Reprints Perkins Bacon 10d on 9d Blue Surcharge rouletted in Orange-Red (2), and Yellow (7, including two pairs), perforated in Yellow, and Black Surcharge rouletted in Orange-Yellow (8, including a block of 4), and perforated in Yellow (4), some faults, most part o.g. Also imperforate in light Brown with weak ‘8 PENCE’ surcharge in black and ‘TEN PENCE’ surcharge in blue, possible of proof status. Some faults, mostly part o.g. (23)

     

    Lot 214
    Estimate: $300 Realised Price : $400

    1884 Reprints Perkins Bacon 1/- imperforate in scarce Dull Violet (3), imperforate in Yellow (2), rouletted in Yellow shades (7, including a pair), and Lake-Brown, and perforated in Chestnut pair, Lake-Brown, Orange-Brown (7, including a strip of 5), and Deep Red-Brown (3, including a pair). Some small faults, still a useful group, mostly part o.g. (26)

       

    Lot 215
    Estimate: $150 Realised Price : $150

    1884 Reprints Perkins Bacon 2/- imperforate in Carmine shades (9, including two blocks of 4), rouletted in Carmine-Red and Bright Carmine, and perforated in Deep Carmine. Mostly without gum, the imperforate stamps may be proofs (12)
