    LAUREATES, EIGHT PENCE

    Lot 413
    Estimate: $1,000 Realised Price : $1,250

Progressive Plate Proof in Deep Blue on card pos. [17] small to large margins showing portion of the adjoining unit at right. Few minor rust spots on reverse, but a wonderful example of this very rare proof, ex Slade Slade. This proof lacks the finished frames which surrounded the words ‘NEW’ and ‘WALES’ on the finished plate. It was recorded in the earliest days of philately and apparently a sheet of 50 existed, although the number now known is considerably less. In 1939 a block of 11 was found from which two singles were cut, the block of 9 now being in the Vickery collection in the Powerhouse Museum, Sydney. There are perhaps a dozen single examples known, of which at least three are institutionalised.

    Lot 414

Orange-yellow pos. [5] margins three sides (large at top), just cut into at base, cancelled ‘69’ of Murrurundi. SG 80, Cat. £600

Orange-yellow pos. [28] small even margins all round, somewhat ambiguous numeral, but possibly ‘86’ of Gayndah (Moreton Bay District - a rare usage if so). Exceptional quality, ex ‘Espana’

    Lot 421
    Estimate: $750 Realised Price : $575

Orange-yellow unplated with clear to good margins with 6d Plate I Yellow-brown tied to small piece by indistinct numerals. The 6d shows a distinct double impression. An attractive piece, ex Clayton

    Lot 422
    Estimate: $1,500 Realised Price : $1,150

Orange-yellow horizontal pair pos. [21-22, 21 variety ‘no leaves right of SOUTH’, 22 variety ‘no lines in spandrels’], small even margins all round, and cancelled indistinct numeral. A few ink marks on reverse do not detract. One of the finest 8d pairs extant, and unique with two major plate varieties. Ex Steinway, Ginger and ‘Manwood’. SG 80b/c Cat. £2850

    Lot 423
    Estimate: $1,500

Ellenborough’ with handstruck ‘3’ in red and London arrival ds (3 MY 1856) on face. Sydney despatch ds in black, step-type ‘PLYMOUTH/ SHIP LETTER’, Plymouth and Leamington arrival ds (MY 7 1856), all in green, on reverse. Light soiling, otherwise fine. Ex Clayton, with 2006 BPA Certificate

    Lot 424
    Estimate: $4,000 Realised Price : $3,000

With 1976 RPSL Certificate stating ‘stamps removed from cover & replaced’. The adhesives pay the triple (3 x 3d) ship letter rate plus 6d registration fee. From the Seybold, Shenfield and ‘Manwood’ collections.
