1916 (19 Sep) letter (foxed) and envelope being official stationery for The Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, S.Y. Aurora, written at Port Chalmers and signed by Lt. J.R. Stenhouse, 1st Officer left in command of \'Aurora\' when Capt Mackintosh went missing in Antarctica. Replying to E.N. Atkin, Gunyah Supply Store, Narrabeen (N.S.W.), Stenhouse states \'The gun mentioned [in Atkin\'s letter] was lent to Gaze who was in quarters at the Hut; it was in good hands and, if all goes well, I shall return it to you on our return from the South\'. Gaze was at Hut Point and Scott\'s Hut. On 20 Dec 1916 \'Aurora\' left Port Chalmers to take part in the search for Capt Mackintosh. Historic material |
