    1853 (24 Oct) cover from Melbourne to Worksop, Nottinghamshire with fair strike of oval \'PAID/MELBOURNE\' ds in red, reverse with London transit ds and Worksop arrival ds (27 JA 55). Prepaid \'3(d)\' as a private ship letter, with \'8\'(d) due on arrival from addressee. Minor peripheral faults and soiling

    1856 (6 Jul) cover to London franked with 6d Orange Woodblock Imperf (close to large margins) tied by '26' Barred Numeral (Camperdown, fine crowned oval ds on reverse), few marks on cover, carried by Black Ball clipper 'Champion of the Seas'; and 1857 (13 Oct) cover to Scotland with 6d Orange Woodblock Imperf (large margins) cancelled '3' Barred Numeral (Castlemaine), adhesive also tied by 'CR' railway handstamp, minor peripheral cover faults, and carried on the 9th homeward voyage of the European & Australian Royal Mail contract (2 covers)

    1857 (12 Mar) cover to London franked with 6d Orange Woodblock Imperf (four margins) tied Barred Numeral '4' (Sandhurst) and with London arrival cds in red, cover stained; and 1858 (9 Jun) cover from Beechworth to Kilmarnock, Scotland with 6d Orange Woodblock Imperf (four margins) tied by Barred Numeral '9', arrival backstamp, flap faults (2 covers)

    1857 (12 Aug) cover to Liverpool (re-addressed to Oxton, Cheshire) franked 6d Orange Woodblock Imperf (four good margins) tied Melbourne '1' Barred Numeral, endorsed 'pr Royal Charter'. With tombstone 'PAID/LIVERPOOL/SHIP' ds in red, '1' accountancy handstamp (credit to Victoria), and Melbourne despatch and Birkenhead arrival datestamps on reverse. Minor cover faults, but generally fine

     

    Lot 120

    1857 (11 Nov) incoming stampless outer from London (Paid cds in red) \'Via Southampton\' to Geelong, readdressed to Queenscliff, and offloaded before ship arrived in Melbourne. Rated \'6\' in red, and reverse with good strike of scarce \'SHIP LETTER/FREE/GEELONG VICTORIA\' cds in red (JA 8 1858) and with small Geelong crowned oval ds in black (JA 11 58). Vertical filing fold, otherwise fine

    1859 (17 Sep) outer from Melbourne to Birmingham franked 1/- Octagonal Perf 12 tied by '1' in bars,and endorsed 'p RMS Bombay Via Marseilles' with Melbourne and Birmingham backstamps. Two light vertical creases, otherwise very fine

    1861 (25 Jan) cover to Stenton, Maine franked with 1d Emblems, 4d Beaded Oval and 1/- Octagonal Perf 12 (faults) tied by Melbourne '1' in bars, endorsed 'Via Marseilles' and with London transit cds in red, New York arrival cds and mss '8'. Cover faults, including tear at upper left, but a scarce 1/5d rate for a ¼ ounce letter to U.S.A. via Marseilles

    1861 (25 May) cover to New York franked 2d Emblems, 3d Blue Beaded Oval and 1/- Octagonal Perf 12 tied by Melbourne '1' Barred Numerals, and endorsed 'p Benares via Marseilles' with London transit cds in red, New York arrival cds, with mss '8' and handstruck '16/CENTS' accountancy mark in red. Vertical filing crease affecting 2d Emblems, otherwise very fine and a scarce rate, 1/5d being the ¼ ounce rate via Marseilles to U.S.A.

    1864 (26 Jul) cover to London with 4d Laureate and 6d Adapted Design tied by Melbourne duplexes, endorsed 'Via Marseilles' and with London arrival cds in red. Minor peripheral creasing, an attractive 10d rate Marseilles franking

    1865 (26 Oct) cover to Molong, N.S.W. franked 6d Black Adapted Design cancelled Melbourne duplex (peripheral toning), and 1866 (12 Apr) cover to Brisbane with 6d Blue Laureate tied by Melbourne duplex, with SHIP LETTER/QUEENSLAND' backstamp, small cover tear at top (2 covers)

    1888 (13 Aug) cover to Switzerland bearing 6d Pale Ultramarine (SG 318a) tied by '314' duplex of Lilydale, backstamps of Melbourne, Napoli, Locarno, Devio and straight-line arrival of Linescio, minor blemishes. Scarce village destination

    Small collection of Barred Numerals in two stockbooks (one with duplexes), mostly on 1890s and 1900s issues, non-duplex types mostly in range up to No. 300, some RRR and RR rated numbers (about 300 stamps)
