    Frank Stamps: Small group with 1883 (22 Sep) cover with 'THE TREASURY' Frank Stamp used from Hobart to Forth, vertical fold, otherwise fine, and the earliest recorded example of a Tasmanian Frank, the system commencing just six weeks prior (ex Karman); 1887 (13 Jul) and 1888 (7 Aug) matching pair of covers with 'THE TREASURER' Frank Stamp in black used from Hobart to Launceston, both with straight line 'REGISTERED' (in worn and recut states respectively) the first roughly opened with small portion of back missing; and c1901 cover with 'HQ DEFENCE FORCES' Frank Stamp in bright green, some peripheral toning but a scarce user (4 covers)

    Estimate: $450

    1829 (27 Mar) entire to Edinburgh with good strike of oval 'HOBART TOWN/V.D.L.', and with reverse step-type 'SHIP LETTER/FALMOUTH' on back, probably carried on the 'Marquis of Lansdowne'. Rated 4d as a paid ship letter, with 1/8d due from addressee comprising 8d ship letter plus 1/- mileage charge to Edinburgh. Very fine

    1835 (25 Apr) entire from Hobart to Edinburgh endorsed 'pr "Eveline" 25th April 1835' rated '4' in red as a paid ship letter but without any despatch marking, reverse with boxed 'INDIA LETTER/GRAVESEND' in red, London transit and Edinburgh arrival datestamps. Very fine

    1837 (25 May) entire to Edinburgh with fair strike of crowned oval 'HOBART TOWN/V.D.L.' ds, and with boxed 'INDIA LETTER/DEAL' in red and Edinburgh arrival ds in red (12 NO 1837) on reverse. Rated 2/8d and with boxed '½' Scottish turnpike tax handstamp. Vertical filing fold, otherwise fine

    Estimate: $240T Realised Price : $180

    1840-1848 Entires from Hobart to London (3, 1840 and 1841 (2)) or Cheltenham (1848), the first three with crowned oval 'GENERAL POST OFFICE/HOBART TOWN/VDL' ds in black or red (2), the last with similar circular ds in red, all fine strikes. Usual filing faults, condition otherwise generally good to fine (4)

    Estimate: $450T

    1840 (11 Jul) inwards entire from Tamworth, England to Hobart Town with London Paid and Ship Letter transit datestamps, rated '1/-' for ship letter rate, and backstamped boxed 'SHIP LETTER' datestamp (25 NO 25/1840) at Hobart. Rated '8'(d) in black for 4d inwards ship letter charge and 4d inland postage for 22 miles to Richmond. Subsequently redirected to Melbourne, receiving the Hobart 'PAID' semi-circle dated 29DE29/1840, and rated '8'(d) in red for return postage to Hobart and 4d ship letter rate to Melbourne (arrival backstamp JA 6/1841). The latest recorded date of the Hobart 'PAID' marking in black (after 1840 always struck in red). Very fine other than for minor peripheral wear

    Estimate: $1,100

    1840 (30 Oct) entire to Calcutta with fine strike of crowned oval 'GENERAL POST OFFICE/HOBART TOWN/VDL' ds, and endorsed 'per ship "Sovereign" from Launceston'. Rated 1/- comprising 8d inland charge to Launceston and 4d ship letter rate. Reverse with boxed Bombay Ship Letter ds indicating charges of 3 annas as incoming ship letter, and 14 annas postage to Calcutta. Very fine to an unusual destination

     

    Lot 79
    Estimate: $1,250

    1850 (18 Feb) envelope from Launceston (backstamp) to San Francisco endorsed 'Paid' and 'Per Swan' rated '5' in red for 1d inland rate plus 4d ship letter rate. Staining at left, otherwise fine, and very scarce early mail to U.S.A.

     

    Lot 80
    Estimate: $1,250

    1852 entire datelined Hobart 23rd February without any Tasmanian markings and apparently carried per favour, addressed to San Francisco, and endorsed 'pr "Architect" ', with San Francisco arrival ds (14 May) and fancy 'SHIP/6' for incoming ship letter charge. The contents of the letter describe gold mining operations in Australia. Few spots of discoloration, otherwise fine

    Estimate: $120T

    1861 (25 Oct) cover from Hobart to New Norfolk with 1857-60 Watermark Double-lined '4' 4d Blue (large margins and showing portion of adjoining unit at left) tied by barred obliterator and with faint Hobart PRE-PAID ds in red. Envelopes tears at left, and back flap tears, otherwise fine

     

    Lot 82
    Estimate: $450

    1890 (13 Oct) cover (addressed by A.F. Basset Hull) to Russia with 6d Mauve Platypus Stamp Duty tied by Hobart duplex, three Russian datestamps in Cyrillic on reverse. Portion of back flap missing, otherwise fine and a rare destination

    Estimate: $150T

    1891 (20 Feb) registered 1d STO wrapper for 'The Federal Australian Philatelist' with printed 'BOOK POST' at upper left used to Brazil, cancelled Hobart Duplex and with chamfered boxed 'REGISTERED/No/2524' in red, with double circle 'MONTCENIS A MACON/A' ds (26 AVRIL 91) and 'CORREIOS/ALAGOIS double circle backstamp, 28 MAIO 91. Reduced at both ends (probably removing additional adhesive(s)), and some soiling, but a remarkable destination

     

    Lot 84
    Estimate: $80T

    1899 (21 Jun) cover to Pretoria, Transvaal (slightly reduced three sides and opened out for display) with 1891 2d on 9d Pale blur tied by Hobart cds, three arrival backstamps, but undeliverable and with boxed 'INCONNU/ONBEKEND', peripheral damage but an unusual destination
