    AUSTRALIAN COLONIES, SOUTH AUSTRALIA

    Lot 60
    Estimate: $175 Realised Price : $135

    1856-58 Colonial Printings 1/- Orange cancelled 'PAID/ADELAIDE' datestamp in blue, touched at upper left and otherwise of fine appearance. SG 12, cat £475

     

    Lot 61
    Estimate: $350

    1842 (4 Jul) entire to London, with fine strike of crowned oval 'GENERAL POST OFFICE/ADELAIDE/S.A.' ds across fold on reverse, and London cds partially off cover. Rated '6(d)' for a ship letter, with '8(d) inwards ship letter charge due from the addressee. Central stain on face, otherwise very fine. The contents were written by Thomas Quinton Stow, who arrived in Adelaide in 1837 and was responsible for forming several new churches there (biographical details included with lot)

    1880 (1 Oct) incoming cover from London to Norwood endorsed 'Per Orient Line via Plymouth', franked 1873-80 6d Grey Plate 17 with wing margin lettered 'BE', tied London duplex and with G.P.O. Adelaide transit cds on face, and Norwood arrival cds on reverse, fine

    1885 (10 Oct) cover to Bombay, re-addressed to Khandalla, India, with 6d Bright Ultramarine Perf 10 x 11½-12½ (SG 141) tied by Adelaide duplex, Bombay arrival and other Indian backstamps following redirection. Small faults, but a scarce destination

    1887 (5 Jan) incoming cover from Glasgow to Adelaide franked 1883-84 6d Dull Green lettered 'DG' and tied by Glasgow duplex. Back flap faults, otherwise fine

     

    Lot 65
    Estimate: $440 Realised Price : $380

    1889 (11 Nov) 1d Violet postcard uprated with 2d Orange Perf 10 and tied by Ship Mail room duplexes, addressed to Haarlem, Holland, with arrival cds and postman route 'A20' handstamp. There were no arrangements between South Australia and overseas postal administrations for the acceptance of postcards, which had to be sent at letter rate. This uprating to 3d was accepted but incorrect, as the rate should be 6d

    Estimate: $90 Realised Price : $95

    1894 (9 Aug) registered cover from the Australian Stamp Co. Ltd. to New Jersey, U.S.A., franked with eleven ½d Brown Perf 15 tied by Glenelg squared circle cds for the U.P.U. foreign rate plus 3d registration fee. With curved 'REGISTERED./No.', backstamped at New York and with Paterson 'REGISTERED' arrival datestamp

    Estimate: $400 Realised Price : $400

    Cancellations: Largely early 1900s postcards (appear low interest) accumulation with mostly squared-circle duplicated range Alberton - Yorketown, some attempt made at classifying, generally average/sub-average strikes, some rarity ratings noted, also sprinkling of circular datestamps, Poste Restante, D.L.O., Delivery Window markings, etc (360+)
