    1855 (4 Jun) entire from Newcastle to Sydney with 6d Greenish-grey Diadem in combination with 2d Blue Laureate tied by '55' numerals and with boxed 'REGISTERED/NEWCASTLE', Sydney arrival ds (JU 5 1855) on reverse. Addressed to a Castlereagh Street pawnbroker, enclosing £1 in payment of interest on a loan secured against a ring. A scarce franking showing use of the 6d Diadem to pay the registration fee prior to the issue of the (6d) Registration stamp on 1 January 1856

    1856 (7 Feb) envelope from Sydney to Sandhurst, U.K. with 6d Greenish-grey Imperf diadem cancelled dumb obliterator, endorsed 'Per Hellespont via Southampton'. With handstruck '3' accountancy mark in red, manuscript '4' and circular 'MORE/TO/PAY' in black tying adhesive. The 'Hellespont' was a private ship which carried mail as far as Singapore to connect with the Far East P & O service. On arrival in London the G.P.O. added the 4d charge for the Far East leg of the journey, hence the 'MORE/TO/PAY handstamp and manuscript '4'. One of only two 'Hellespont' covers originating from N.S.W. and an important postal history item, ex Trevor Davis

    1856 (11 Oct) cover 'per Montmorency' Sydney to Scotland franked Imperf 6d and 1/- Diadems four margins each except where cut into at left on 6d, representing the double 9d (2 x 6d ship letter + 2 x 3d colonial rate) rate. The adhesives struck with the Sydney dumb obliterator which ties one of the values. The rear with Sydney departure and Ayr arrival cds and the face with a Liverpool transit mark. Creased and small repair at top otherwise a scarce double rate

Very fine, but unfortunately a (6d) Registered adhesive is missing

    1857 (23 May) entire from Sydney to New York with 2d Blue (touched twop sides) and 1/- Pale Red (clear to large margins) Imperf Diadems tied by dumb obliterators, endorsed 'Per "Simla" via England', mss '8' and '16' accountancy marks in red, London PAID datestamp in red (3 AU 1857), 'AUSTRALIAN/PAID/LIVERPOOL/PACKET' datestamp in red (AU 1 57), and '5/N. YORK AM PKT' arrival datestamp of AUG 17. This Australian mail carried by E&ARM packet 'Simla' was transferred to the 'Scamander' at Alexandria, which unusually docked at Liverpool instead of the usual terminus of Southampton. A very fine and attractive franking

Both covers with stamps excised and replaced, and with some toning (2 covers)

    1859 (1 Aug) registered cover from Braidwood to Switzerland franked 6d and 1/- Imperf Diadems both cut-into and 2 x (6d) bicoloured Registered stamps - one hinged in place and cut into, the other with closed tear. Each cancelled '36' ray type numeral and the face with 'REGISTERED/BRAIDWOOD', London Paid cds, Calais cds, oval 'PD' marking, CROWN/REGISTERED and French 'CHARGE' markings. The rear with Braidwood, Basel and Locarno cds. Closed tear at left on rear flap and peripheral faults though a rare example of two Registered stamps used on the same cover

    1863 (21 Jul) cover (with contents) from Sydney to England bearing 1d Diadem Perf 12 tied by Sydney duplex and endorsed by Private G. Hummerston and signed by Captain J.D. Downing Commander of the 1st Battalion 12th Regiment authorising the concessionary 1d soldiers' rate. The rear with Preston transit and Fleetwood arrival cds. Few minor blemishes though only two examples of perforated Diadems used to pay this rate are recorded. Contents answer an enquiry as to the death of William Proctor whom the writer knew prior to his discharge and who went to York, Western Australia to work. The writer gives information as to how to obtain a death certificate and to make further enquiries with a William Dilly of Vasse, Western Australia (typed transcript included). Fascinating example of military postal history. Ex Jewell and Sattin

    1867 (9 Apr) large part 'Cattle Diseases Prevention Act of 1866, Notice of Contribution Payable by Owners' registered form with 1860-72 8d Yellow-orange Diadem Perf 13 tied by '66' ray type numeral from Singleton to Camberwell, despatch ds on reverse. A rare franking to meet the 2d inland rate + 6d registration fee, contrary to regulations as the (6d) Registered stamp had to be used on registered mail. Ex J.S. White

    1867 (1 Jun) cover to Bordeaux, France with Perf 13 1/- Carmine Diadem used with 2d De La Rue tied by Sydney 'NSW' in concentric ovals duplexes, endorsed 'via Panama'. Manuscript '8' accountancy mark in red and 'PD' in circle in red on face, with arrival ds (26 AOUT 67) on reverse. Despite the endorsement, this cover was sent on the usual P & O service leaving Sydney on 24 June

    1867 (24 Jun) soldier's letter to Nailsworth (redirected to Inchbrook), England, with De La Rue 1d Perf 12½ tied by Sydney duplex. Endorsed 'From No. 658 Pte. James Penley 50th Regiment' and countersigned by the Commanding Officer, and with Stroud and Nailsworth arrival backstamps. The 50th Regiment had been in New Zealand fighting in the Second Maori War, and had departed for Sydney of 3 June 1867. Three small tears in top of envelope and some overall soling, but a very scarce soldier's concessionary rate cover, ex Gerald Sattin

Arrival ds on reverse for 24 FEVR 70. Some flap faults still a fine example of the 1/4d rate for a ½oz. letter via Marseilles

    1870 (28 Jan) large part cover from Sydney to Antigua via Southampton per R.M.S "Geelong", franked 6d and 1/- Diadems Perf 13 each cancelled and tied with Sydney duplex and representing the ½ oz rate, and with arrival backstamp. The cover rather flimsy and repaired at top, left and rear flap and portion of the reverse missing nonetheless of good appearance

    1871 (23 Feb) envelope with contents from Tocumwal to Tennessee, U.S.A. with 6d Purple diadem Perf 13 and 4d De La rue strip of 3 tied by '507' ray type numerals, 'SAN FRANCISCO CAL/10' ds (APR 13) on face, and four transit ds on reverse. Endorsed 'Via England Overseas Route' but apparently underpaid and sent by the trans-Pacific route. Small portion of back flap missing and stain on face (apparently where an adhesive was removed prior to posting)

Tanjore'. With handstruck '1d' and mss '11' accountancy marks on face and Antigua arrival ds (NO 17 72) on reverse. Small portions of back flap missing, still an exceptional example from this famous correspondence

The envelope is endorsed 'Packet No 2 contg 3 deeds/Deed Branch Sydney 10 April 1877', with central fold and some faults, nevertheless a remarkable printed papers franking

    1878 (28 Oct) small mourning cover from Sydney to Rouen, France franked with very late use of 1/- Diadem Perf 13 (replaced two years earlier by 1/- DLR), tied by Sydney duplex and French transit cds. Redirected to Germany upon arrival and charged '10' pfg. Rear flap with tears though an unusual example of redirected mail

    Estimate: $550

    1881 (24 Jun) envelope to Germany bearing 1871 8d Yellow Perf 13 tied by Sydney 'N.S.W.' in concentric ovals duplex, and endorsed 'Via Naples per John Elder'. The correct rate to Germany at this time was 9d, and the boxed 'INSUFFICIENTLY/PAID' was applied, also the rare diamond 'GB/1F66c' Anglo-French accountancy mark. The latter would seem to be an error, as this cover was not routed through France. An unusual usage
