1831 (9 Apr) entire 'p Barque Agnes' from India to Bathurst and redirected back to Sydney. The rear with framed Calcutta GPO ds and the face with handstruck 'BATHURST/N.S.W' and Sydney GPO cds (PHNSW Type S2 unusually struck in green though with typically worn circular border) and rated '2/6'(d) upon arrival (double rate). The contents concern advice that the recipient’s brother had arranged the delivery of two boxes of 2500 Spanish dollars (coinage) to him with a separate signed, wax-sealed deed/receipt. Peripheral faults and insect damage in places though the earliest letter from India to Australia in private hands believed to exist

1831 (29 Apr) entire Parramatta to Bathurst endorsed 'Paid' and 'Immediate' and rated '8'(d). The face with clear and early strike of the framed 'PARRAMATTA /POST PAID' contents written by the Rev Samuel Marsden (1764-1838) who became the senior Anglican Minister in NSW in 1800 and later a Magistrate. He is credited as being the first (in 1809) to export wool to England and introducing sheep and wine-growing to New Zealand

1832-46 correspondence to George (or Mrs) Ranken at Saltram or Killoshiel (Bathurst) comprising two 1832 trimmed fronts from London, entire from Bathurst to Mrs Ranken in Sydney rated '9'(d), 1833 trimmed front from Sydney, 1841 entire to Mrs Ranken written by Isabella Gorman (1820-1915) wife of John Valentine Gorman, one time Chairman of Woollahra Council, three from Hartley two of which are written by James Walker (pioneer settler in the Lithgow region who took up the Wallerawang station in 1824) and an 1843 example from Walker endorsed by his brother Thomas Walker (1804-86) for franking privilege and struck with the 'CROWN/FREE/JY*26/1843' marking. Condition fair to fine (9)

Rated '8'(d) due. Few small tears and a file fold though a significant rarity. Contents concern home remedies for illness and is addressed to Jane Norton (1808-40), wife of Sydney solicitor James Norton

The face struck with a blurred framed 'BATHURST/POST PAID' marking on face and Sydney GPO (3.4.1835) and circular 'LIVERPOOL/N.S.W/*' transit markings. Few file folds and peripheral faults though a very early Bathurst example of PHNSW Type P11 marking and only the second example of pre-paid internal mail under the 1825 Act believed to exist. 1835-43 correspondence to Thomas Sloman of Bathurst from his father, the majority written and posted at Exeter, Devonshire and with London and Sydney ship letter handstamps though no examples with any Bathurst arrival markings. Three carried privately and apparently only placed in the mail once in Sydney and a further six carried entirely by hand without any markings. Some with file folds, ageing and peripheral wear. Thomas Martin Sloman (1811-1902) was an accountant with the Bathurst Bank and in 1872 became its manager after various activities in business and country stations (22)
