    Yellowish Wove Paper: 1d Carmine [7, variety 'no leaves right of SOUTH'] clear to good margins, few tone spots on reverse and a horizontal pair [14-15, latter variety 'two leaves right of SOUTH'] close to just touching at top, large margins other sides.     Bluish Medium Wove Paper: Carmine [15, variety 'two leaves right of SOUTH'] clear to small margins cancelled '64' of Maitland, Scarlet [9, variety 'WALE'] close to large margins (showing portion of adjoining unit at base), cancelled '40' of Bombala, vertical pair [5/15, latter variety 'two leaves right of 'SOUTH'] close but clear margins all round except just touched at top, cancelled '55' (Newcastle). Ex A. Leslie Leon, Brick-red [7, variety no leaves right of 'SOUTH'] (2 - one clear to small margins all round, the other small margins three sides, both cancelled Sydney obliterator) and horizontal pair (unplated) clear to small margins cancelled indistinct numeral.     Bluish Medium Wove Paper: 1d Scarlet, SG 46, and 2d Laureate Plate I pair, all clear to good margins, tied by '55' numerals on 1853 (23 Apr) outer from Newcastle to England. Endorsed 'pr First Ship', with superb Newcastle despatch datestamp. 'SHIP LETTER/SYDNEY', step-type 'SHIP LETTER/PLYMOUTH', Taunton and Langport arrival (AU 14 1853) datestamps on reverse. Two vertical filing folds, and the British marks on reverse are oxidised and appear vivid orange-yellow! An attractive 5d (2d Inland + 3d Ship Letter) franking

    Bluish Medium Wove Paper: 1d Brick-red horizontal pair [7-8, former variety 'no leaves right of SOUTH'] good margins all round and cancelled '88' of Port Macquarie. Very fine condition. SG 48/a Cat £465+

    Bluish Medium Wove Paper: 1d Brick-red horizontal pair (unplated) margins all round (just clear at bottom left and right) cancelled central '1' of Ryde (the second type with sloping '1' rated R). A very attractive pair. SG 48 Cat £280+

    1d various shades and printings on unwmkd paper, complete reconstruction of the engraved plate of 50 with additional examples of [12], [23], [30] and [37]. The reconstruction includes 20 pairs, a strip of 3, an L-shaped block of 3 and a strip of four and incorporates the major engraving errors on Nos. [7], [9] and [21]. The condition is far superior to that usually seen and many four-margin stamps are included. An exceptional achievement, minimum SG Cat £7280 (50)

    1d selection on unwmkd paper, comprising Hard Yellowish Paper in Carmine (2) and Bluish Paper in Carmine (3), Scarlet (2), Vermilion and Brick-red (3), all superior four margin examples. A very fine group rarely offered in this quality. Also an 1852 (27 Mar) entire with carmine on yellowish singles (2) both good four-margin examples but horizontal crease through adhesives and two further 1d stamps would appear to be missing. (11 + 1 cover). SG Cat £2360

    2d Plate II Deep Prussian Blue, SG 62, worn impression position [42] unused, vertical fault into design at top left and small black mark on face, still of fine appearance with good colour and small to good margins showing complete frameline at top

    2d Plate II early and worn impressions, reconstruction of the engraved plate of 50. The condition is far better than that usually seen with the large majority of stamps fine four-margin examples, with all printings represented, [23] being variety 'WAEES' and [42] showing small portion of imprint. Minimum SG Cat £5000 (50)

    2d Plate II selection comprising Early Impressions (12, inc one pair and [23, variety 'WAEES'] and Worn impressions (9, incl [23, variety 'WAEES'] cancelled numeral '95' of Brisbane and a horizontal strip of three [37-39] showing portions of adjoining units at base). Also a Worn impression used on 1852 (30 Jan) entire from West Maitland to Sydney. All hand-picked examples with full margins and a very fine group. SG Cat £2990+ (23 + 1 cover)

    2d Plate II selection on both bluish and white wove papers, all hand-picked examples with full margins and a very fine group, incl examples cancelled '87’ (Ipswich) and 95 (Brisbane), Prussian Blue [3, variety 'WALES' partly covered with way lines] (2 - both showing complete frameline at right and one each on the bluish wove and thick white papers) plus a horizontal strip of three [42-44] large margins three sides showing complete framelines cancelled heavy indistinct numerals. SG 63/63a/64/64a Cat £2180+ (26)

    3d Blue-green, SG 70, horizontal pair, clear margins all round except just touched at top right, tied by Sydney obliterators to 1855 (7 Mar) envelope to Jarrow, England. Endorsed 'James Baines', with handstruck '5' accountancy mark just tying pair and 'AUSTRALIAN PAID/LIVERPOOL/PACKET' receiving datestamp in red, Gateshead arrival (MY 22 1855) datestamp on reverse. Slight soiling on reverse, otherwise a fine example of the 6d Ship Letter rate. Ex Butterwick, Shephard and 'Manwood'

Also another in a curious grey shade, four margins but possibly a changeling, plus a range of Plate II in Brown comprising [2] small margins except where touched at top left, [8] margins barely clear and tiny thin at bottom edge and [13] small margins all round except where touched at bottom left SG 76/77 Cat £1400 (5)

"Ellenborough" ', handstruck '3' and London arrival (3 MY 1856) datestamp in red. Sydney despatch datestamp in black, step-type 'PLYMOUTH/SHIP LETTER', Plymouth and Leamington arrival (MY 7 1856) datestamps, all in green, fine. Ex Clayton. 2006 BPA Certificate

    Wmk Double-lined '1': 1d Red-orange horizontal strip of four [3-6] part original gum, with clear margins three sides and with full sheet margin at top. There are three vertical creases which have been reduced and are not very apparent from the front. A rare mint multiple, ex C.L. Pack and Dale-Lichtenstein

    3d Wmk Double-lined '3' selection comprising 15 singles, one [37, variety 'WACES'], and a pair, all selected four-margin examples (17). SG 88 Cat £646

    3d Yellow-green, error Wmk Double-lined '2', SG 87b, clear top and right, just into at base and touched at places on left, cancelled by Sydney obliterator. A presentable example of this rarity. Cat £1600

     

    Lot 122
    Estimate: $4,000

    3d Yellow-green, error Wmk Double-lined '2', SG 87b, pair [42-43] small margins two sides and clear to just touching at left and base, cancelled by legible '6' of St Mary's (rated RRR). Two pairs are recorded of this error, of which this is by far the finer. It is probable that the pair offered here is the one first recorded as being shown at a meeting of The Philatelic Society of Australia in 1888, and was later in the C.L. Pack Collection. A major New South Wales rarity in very fine condition. Cat £3200+
