    Diadems: Die Proofs on thick card comprising 1d in Deep Scarlet (55 x 70mm), 2d in Deep Blue (57 x 77mm), 3d in Bright Green (58 x 73mm), 5d in Violet (70 x 57mm), 8d in Red-brown (68 x 52mm) and 1/- in Rose-Carmine (55 x 69mm), occasional minor surface marks, otherwise superb Said to have been pulled by De La Rue for the 1867 Paris Exhibition (or perhaps the 1872 South Kensington Exhibition), it has been stated that three sets of proofs were pulled. The set offered here is from the Dr W.R.D. Wiggins Collection; a second set is in the British Library and a third set (on thin wove paper and cut down to framelines at sides) was in the Hutson Collection. Magnificent showpiece proofs

    1d Orange-vermilion block of four with experimental roulettes made by John Dutton in 1856, fine with large part o.g. (some roulettes at top reinforced). Accompanied by a 2-page signed letter from Dutton dated at Wooloomooloo, 3 November 1856, to the Postmaster-General (W.H. Christie) with a proposal to perforate stamps and enclosing a sample of his work. This block (ex Wiggins and 'Manwood') is believed to be the largest multiple of 1d roulettes now remaining from the block of 24 ex-Ginger

The Imperf 2d Plate II were only issued in Queensland, and this very rare use in New South Wales was possibly by a traveller writing home. A very significant cover from the Ginger, Gordon Kaye, 'Manwood' and Stevenson Collections

    6d Greenish-grey (four good margins) cancelled dumb obliterator on 1856 (7 Feb) envelope from Sydney to Sandhurst, U.K., endorsed 'Per Hellespont via Southampton'. With handstruck '3' accountancy mark in red, manuscript '4' and circular 'MORE/TO/PAY' in black tying adhesive. The 'Hellespont' was a private ship which carried mail as far as Singapore to connect with the Far East P & O service. On arrival in London the G.P.O. added the 4d charge for the Far East leg of the journey, hence the 'MORE/TO/PAY handstamp and manuscript '4'. One of only two 'Hellespont' covers originating from N.S.W. and an important postal history item, ex Trevor Davis

    1/- Rosy-vermilion (3, all with margins clear to good) used with 3d Yellow-green (cut into at right) cancelled dumb obliterators on 1858(10 Feb) entire (no side flaps) from Sydney to Leamington, U.K., endorsed 'p Simla via Marseilles'. Arrival backstamp for AP 3 58. A rare multiple usage of the 1/- Diadem for the quintuple Marseilles rate (1-1¼oz)

    Estimate: $750

    1/- Pale Red (clear to large margins) and 2d Blue (touched right and top left) tied by dumb obliterators on 1857 (23 May) entire from Sydney to New York, endorsed 'Per "Simla" via England', mss '8' and '16' accountancy marks in red, London PAID datestamp* in red (3 AU 1857), 'AUSTRALIAN/PAID/LIVERPOOL/PACKET' datestamp in red (AU 1 57), and '5/N. YORK AM PKT' arrival datestamp of AUG 17. This Australian mail carried by E&ARM packet 'Simla' was transferred to the 'Scamander' at Alexandria, which unusually docked at Liverpool instead of the usual terminus of Southampton. A very fine and attractive franking

    1/- Brownish-red (2, both good to large margins) cancelled dumb obliterators on 1857 (10 Nov) entire (no side flaps) from Sydney to Leamington, U.K., endorsed 'p Mail Steamer via Marseilles' and with arrival d.s. of JA 8 58 on reverse. A fine example of the quadruple rate (¾-1oz)
