1837 (28 June) entire to Port Stephens, N.S.W. with good strike of the crowned 'COLOMBO/POST PAID' ds, and with crowned oval 'GENERAL POST OFFICE/SYDNEY ds, SE 6 1837. Carried on H.M.S. 'Conway' via Madras, and by coastal ship to Port Stephens, rated 1/- representing 4d double inwards ship letter plus 8d double intracolonial ship letter. Staining at base and overall light toning, but a very rare origin for mail to Australia at this early period. The addressee, James Charles White, was the Superintendent of Works for the Australian Agricultural Co. (biographical details included with lot) |
