1942 commercial airmail cover to Sydney with 3d Brown (x 2) cancelled straight-line 'H.M.A.S. MELVILLE', with a second very fine strike on the provisional registration label, plus two more across the flap where also is endorsed by the sender 'EC JOHNSON/HMAS PLATYPUS'. With 'ARMY POST OFFICE/3JY44/O65' (used at Darwin) transit and Sydney arrival backstamp, and tombstone naval censor handstamp in violet. Use of ships' names was highly irregular and contrary to military regulations. ['Platypus' was in Darwin Harbour when the Japanese bombed Darwin on 19/2/1942. She remained in Darwin as a training ship and later as a base ship. HMAS 'Melville' was the naval shore station at Darwin]. Previously sold for AU$661 at a Melbourne auction in 2010
