    SPECIMEN STAMPS OF THE AUSTRALIAN COLONIES, QUEENSLAND, CHALON ISSUES

    Lot 90
    Estimate: $8,000 Realised Price : $13,500

    1860-61 Wmk small Star Clean-cut Perf 14-15½, (6d) Registered, SG 11, showing line Wmk at left, with portion of "Rowland Hill" ‘CANCELLED’. Fine except for tone spot at top. Cat £9000. 2005 Ceremuga Certificate

    Six examples were prepared at the request of Ormond Hill in 1861, and presented to colleagues, including his uncle, Rowland Hill. Four examples of the (6d) Registered have been recorded from the horizontal block of six, of which this is No. 1; No. 4 is in the Royal Philatelic Collection. This stamp is a recent discovery subsequent to the publication of ‘Cancelled by Perkins Bacon’ by P. Jaffé (1998)

    1862-78 Chalons with Type 1 diagonal overprint, an all-different group comprising blue/violet opt on 1862-67 No Wmk 1/- Grey, 1866 5/- Pale Rose Litho, 1868-73 Wmk Truncated Star Perf 13 1/- Greenish-Grey, 1868-78 Wmk Crown over Q (I) Perf 13 4d Yellow, and black opt on 1864-65 Wmk Small Star Perf 13 6d Yellow-Green and (6d) Registered, 1866 4d Grey-Lilac Litho, 1868-74 Wmk Truncated Star Perf 13 1d Vermilion, 2d Blue, 3d Olive-Brown, 1/- Mauve, and 1868-78 Wmk Crown over Q (I) Perf 13 6d Yellow-Green (opt inverted). Few small faults, still a scarce group (13)

    The Type 1 overprint, although not distributed through the U.P.U., is found in many overseas official collections

    1862-78 selection of Type 1 overprints, comprising blue/violet opts on 1862-67 No Wmk 1/- (2, one imperf, margins possibly trimmed), 1868-74 Wmk Truncated Star 1d (2, one opt double), 2d and 3d (2), and black opt. 1864-65 Wmk Small Star (6d) Registered (3, one with double perf at right), 1866 4d Litho, and 1868-74 Wmk Truncated Star 1/- Mauve (2) (13)

    1866 No Wmk Perf 13 4d Grey-Lilac Litho block of 12 with Type 1 diagonal overprint in black, one partly doubled. Slight gum toning, still very attractive

    These overprints are from perforated proof sheets pulled in the approved colours in 1881
