SPECIMEN STAMPS OF THE AUSTRALIAN COLONIES, NEW SOUTH WALES, U.P.U. RECEIVING AUTHORITY HANDSTAMPS

Lot 53		Estimate: $400 Realised Price : $575 1899 ½d Green QV, 2½d Prussian Blue Record Reign and 6d Orange Centennial pairs c.t.o. with ‘N.S.W.’ in concentric ovals, and additional ‘ULTRAMAR’ handstamp in blue, large part o.g. Between 1895 and 1910 U.P.U. specimen stamps sent to Lisbon for distribution to Portuguese Colonies were further handstamped ‘ULTRAMAR’ prior to despatch. These three stamps, distributed to the U.P.U. in April 1899 were the only New South Wales stamps cancelled-to-order before distribution
Lot 54		Estimate: $300 Realised Price : $440 1902 2/6d Green Lyrebird optd Type 15, with additional ‘ULTRAMAR’ handstamp in violet, affixed to portion of ledger sheet The Type 15 ‘SPECIMEN’ overprint was used only for the 2/6d Lyrebird for U.P.U. distribution
