Progressive Plate Proof in Deep Blue on card pos. [17] small to large margins showing portion of the adjoining unit at right. Few minor rust spots on reverse, but a wonderful example of this very rare proof, ex Slade Slade. This proof lacks the finished frames which surrounded the words ‘NEW’ and ‘WALES’ on the finished plate. It was recorded in the earliest days of philately and apparently a sheet of 50 existed, although the number now known is considerably less. In 1939 a block of 11 was found from which two singles were cut, the block of 9 now being in the Vickery collection in the Powerhouse Museum, Sydney. There are perhaps a dozen single examples known, of which at least three are institutionalised.
