    AUSTRALIAN COMMONWEALTH, QUEEN ELIZABETH II ISSUES

    Lot 320
    Estimate: $600

    1953-65 large accumulation of commemorative issues on hagners, mostly in mint blocks (including quantities of 2/3d values), many plate varieties in positional pieces (1960 5d NT Exploration fairly specialised including se-tenant multiples showing different types), range of publicity photographs and photographs of unadopted designs. Virtually all MUH/M and generally very fine/superb. A very useful lot (100s)

    1953 Produce Food 3d and 3½d se-tenant strips of 3 presentation 'die proofs' in issued colours (actually imperforate stamps) in sunken mounts, with Note Printing cachets on reverse endorsed '6/23-1-53' (presented to Sir Daryl Lindsay of the Stamp Advisory Committee). Eight pairs of die proofs were prepared, one pair of which is in the Royal Philatelic Collection. A few tone spots on 3d Beef, otherwise fresh and superb and a rarely offered set. BW 287/8/9DP(1) and 290/1/2/DP(1), cat AU$18000 (2)

    1953-56 Queen Elizabeth II 3½d Carmine-red block of 4 affixed to Post Office Publicity Card, sellotape stains on front and reverse from previous mounting, and a few other small marks. BW296x, cat AU$100

    1954 Royal Visit 3½d Carmine-red M (150) & U (20) accumulation of plate varieties, mostly in positional multiples, and including 'Retouch to Duke's Forehead' State II in M block of 18 (badly toned) and U (2), Major Re-entry in M block of 8 (2) and U (8), plus a number of other listed flaws. Also 7d (21) and 2/- (21) M. High cat value (212)

    1954 Royal Visit 3½d Carmine block of 18 from top right corner of sheet, R3/6 showing variety 'Retouch to Duke's Forehead' State I, some small tone spots on some units (not the variety) and mounted in selvedge only. Also State II of the same variety fine used. A scarce pair, BW 308j,ja, cat AU$2200+

    1954 3½d Red Cross blocks of 4 from bottom left corners of sheets showing Plate Nos. '1', '2', '3' and '4' ('2' and '4' partial only). Plate 2 hinged on upper units, and Plate 4 hinged in selvedge only, otherwise very fine MUH. BW cat AU$800 (16)

    1955 Cobb & Co. 3½d and 2/- (2 each) affixed to Post Office Publicity Card, staining at edges caused by previous sellotape, few minor bends and one 3½d with tone spot. BW 327x, cat AU$200

    1959-64 Fauna Definitives accumulation on hagners with mint, mostly in blocks, comprising 6d (21), 8d (135 with many varieties), 9d (18), 11d (46), 1/- (26), 1/2d (75) and including helecon printings, first day covers from various makers with 6d (4), 8d (4), 9d (3), 11d (3), 1/- (4, one from Eileen Mayo), 1/2d (2), and commercial solo usages of 6d (2), 8d, 9d (2), 11d (2, one believed to be from first experimental helecon printing and scarce as such), 1/- and 1/2d (2). Mostly fine and a useful lot (16 stamps + 30 covers)

    1959-61 9d Kangaroos solo franking used on 1959 (30 Oct) airmail postcard from Tumbarumba to Japan, the 'Other Asian Countries' rate, apparently penpal correspondence, easily the scarcest of the Zoological solo frankings

    1959-64 Flora Definitives group comprising commercial covers incl 2 x double rate covers to U.K. bearing 2/3d Yellow-green Wattle. Also mint, mostly in blocks with 1/6d (18), 2/- (18), 2/3d Green on Yellow (27, incl the three states of R4/9 'Flaw on T of WATTLE' and retouches) 2/3d Yellow-green (39 incl varieties), 2/5d (18), 3/- (17, plus publicity photo), all very fine (137 stamps + 6 covers)

    1959-64 2/3d Wattle group of plate varieties, with 2/3d Green on Yellow variety 'Oblique Line Through Right Side of First T of WATTLE' (R4/9) in MUH block of 4, First Retouch in M strip of 3, and Second Retouch in M pair and used; and 2/3d Bright Yellow-green on white paper R4/9 Second Retouch in MUH block of 10, and R1/2 variety 'Colour Spot over 2/3 Retouched' in block of 4 (helecon paper, some gum disturbance).     1960 5d Christmas perforation pip fractures, comprising Sheet A (BW 381ba) in M block of 4 and U block of 8, and Sheet B State II (BW 381bc) in U block of 8, and State III in M and U blocks of 8, all fine, BW cat AU$1200 (10M, 18U)

    1962 5d Australian Inland Mission presentation proof in issued colour in sunken frame, with manuscript notation of reversed numbered 'No. 3/5.9.62' (C.W. Davidson, Postmaster-General). Fresh and superb, offered with the envelope in which it was originally contained. Ten proofs were prepared, one of which is in the Royal Collection. The BW catalogue is incorrect in stating that this was an imperforate proof, as perforations are just visible along the top edge, hence the low estimate

    1962 5d Country Womens’ Conference presentation die proof in issued colour in sunken frame, with Note Printing Branch cachet on reverse endorsed '27.8.62/8' (F.D. Manley, Stamp Advisory Committee). Fresh and fine, ten die proofs were prepared, one of which is in the Royal Collection. BW 388DP(1), cat AU$3000

    1963 5d Blue Mountains die proof in issued colour on thick paper (66mm x 53mm) with cut corners, fine and superb. This does not appear to be printed on stamp paper and may not therefore be a 'liberated' presentation die proof, but rather a previously unrecorded proof from a different source

    1963 5d Export presentation die proof in issued colour in sunken frame, with Note Printing Branch cachet on reverse endorsed '2.10.63/4' (B.F. Jones, Deputy Director-General of the P.M.G.'s Department). Fresh and superb, offered with the envelope in which it was originally contained. Ten die proofs were prepared, one of which is in the Royal Collection. BW 397(DP)1, cat AU$3000

    1963-65 5d Green and 5d Red QEII Definitives, matched plate varieties in both colours, comprising 'Recut Dashes 2mm N.W. of Oval (BW 398,402e, Sheet B, R8/7), 'Retouched Cross-hatching of Oval Opposite Eyes and on Nose' (BW 398,402f, Sheet C, L8/3), and 'Retouched Lines and Oval Adjoining Leaves' (BW 398,402g, Sheet C, R2/8), each fine used with machine cancels. also 5d Red booklet plate variety 'Plate Crack at Top Left and Above Oval' (?Panel J 6/1), toning in top perfs. Very scarce varieties, cat AU$445 (7)

    1965 5d Red QEII Definitive horizontal pair from right of sheet error 'Misplaced Perforations', very fine MUH. This is the pair illustrated in the catalogue, BW 402bb, cat AU$500

    1965 5d Red QEII Definitive variety 'Retouched Crosshatching of Oval Opposite Eyes and on Nose, also in Angle of Queen's Neck and Hair', a very rare plate variety fine used with machine cancel. BW 402ha, cat AU$350

    1963 2/3d Compac Cable presentation proof in issued colours in sunken frame with Note Printing Branch cachet on reverse and numbered '7' (D. Dundas, Stamp Advisory Committee). Proof fine, but foxing around edges of mount. It is now believed that all examples of this proof were prepared using perforated stamps (not imperforate as stated in the Catalogue), hence the reduced estimate

    1964-65 Birds Definitives accumulation on hagners, with first day covers (5, incl set on three official PMG envelopes), set of full colour postcard reproductions produced by The Stamp Factory, 2/- solo frankings on commercial covers (2), plus a range of mint pairs and blocks, many positional pieces with constant plate varieties (7 covers, 6 picture postcards, + 144 stamps)
