    Estimate: $5,000 Purchase Price : $4,427

    1811 (17 Nov) entire from Sydney to Stirling, North Britain, endorsed 'Per Gambier', without New South Wales markings. Rated '1/1' on arrival, crossed through and changed to '2/2' (due to enclosure), and with 'JU 8 812' arrival backstamp. The letter enclosing a payment is signed by Maurice Charles O'Connell, commanding the 73rd Regiment which had arrived in Sydney in 1809 with Governor Macquarie, who appointed him Lieutenant-Governor. He married former Governor Bligh's daughter, and left the Colony in 1814 for Ceylon. He returned in 1838 as a Major-General in command of military forces in New South Wales, a position he held until 1847. A fine and early letter from New South Wales

    1828 (21 March) entire headed 'Denbigh District of Cook', addressed to Newcastle, South Wales, no Sydney markings, rated '1/8' and with step-type 'SHIP LETTER/PLYMOUTH' on reverse. The letter speaks of 'our leaving Port Macquarie & our being comfortably settled near my brothers within 30 miles of Parramatta'. Light overall toning, otherwise fine

    1851 (1 Nov) outer from Albury to Melbourne with Sydney View 1d Dull Carmine Plate II pair (touched bottom left and right) tied by '50' numerals, Albury despatch and Melbourne arrival backstamps. Vertical filing crease, otherwise fine, ex Ed Druce

    1854 (16 Oct) cover to Newcastle via Sydney with 1d Laureate Wmk '1' pair (close to touching all around and slightly oxidised) tied by '21' numerals of Campbell Town (ds on reverse). Slight soiling

    1857 (28 Sep) entire to London franked 6d Greyish-brown Imperf Diadem cancelled (and just tied) by '92' in rays (Casino, rated RRR) and endorsed 'By E&A RMC Ship Simla', with Casino despatch and Sydney transit backstamps, and London arrival cds on face. Very fine, and carried on the 9th homeward voyage of the European & Australian Royal Mail contract

    1858 (10 Dec) cover from Sydney to London with 6d Greenish-grey Imperf Diadem (very fine with four good to large margins) tied by 'N.S.W.' in ovals and endorsed 'pr Columbian', carried on the 23rd homeward voyage of the European & Australian Royal Mail contract. Couple of small stains at top of envelope, otherwise very fine

    1859 (29 Jan) entire to Melbourne franked with 6d Grey Imperf Diadem (three margins, touched at base) tied by Sydney duplex and endorsed 'City of Sydney', with Sydney despatch backstamp and 'SHIP LETTER/FREE/G.P.O. VICTORIA' ds in red on reverse, fine

    1864 (20 Feb) entire from Sydney to Shanghai with 1863-72 1/- Rose-carmine Diadem Perf 13 (SG 168) tied by 'NSW' obliterator. Reverse with Sydney despatch cds, and Hong Kong transit cds in blue (AP 11 64). Very fine and scarce early mail to China

    1867 (1 Aug) cover to Hexham, Northumberland franked with 6d Purple Perf 13 Diadem tied by Sydney duplex, endorsed 'Via Panama' with London transit cds on face, and Hexham arrival cds on reverse. Some staining (largely limited to the back) and of fine appearance

    1875 (20 Oct) cover from Gundagai to Paterson, New Jersey, with 1871-84 6d Lilac tied by '46' rays type numeral, and with 30mm 'PAID ALL' circular handstamp in red. Gundagai despatch and Sydney transit cds on reverse, and 'SAN FRANCISCO/PAID ALL' transit cds in red on face. Few tears at top of envelope and with flap defect

    1883 (25 Aug) cover to Paris with 1882-95 6d Lilac Perf 10 tied by Sydney duplex, and endorsed 'per S.S. "Australia" ', Paris arrival cds. Minor wrinkles, and a few small tears at top of envelope, but attractive

    1886 (31 May) stampless cover with two strikes of Sydney duplex, addressed to Downham, Norfolk (JY 12 86 backstamp). There is no evidence of stamps having fallen off, and most unusually avoiding taxing at either despatch or receipt ends

    1889 Sailor's Letter from the HMS 'Swinger' correspondence to Boston, Lincolnshire, with G.B. 1881 1d Lilac affixed for concessionary rate and cancelled on arrival in London. Stamp torn away and replaced as is the case with virtually all 'Swinger' covers, with toning on upper half of cover and other small faults

    1891 (11 Aug) cover to St. Louis, Missouri, with 6d Carmine Centennial tied by Sydney duplex, and with 30mm circular 'PAID ALL' handstamp unusually in black (about four recorded), with 'SAN FRANCISCO/PAID ALL' cds and 'ST. LOUIS & Co. BLUFFS R.P.O.' double circle ds in violet on reverse. Slightly soiled, otherwise fine

"Omrah" ', reverse with arrival cds of 3-9 05. Some minor creases, otherwise very fine, 1/5d representing the 7 x 2d rate for a letter weighing 3-3 ounces
