    Lot 27
    Estimate: $400 Realised Price : $300

    1853 (24 Feb) entire from Molong to Sydney with 2d Laureate Plate I (four good margins) cancelled with manuscript '15' and with manuscript post office endorsement 'Molong PO/2/24/53', Sydney arrival datestamp on reverse, very fine. A rare use when neither the Molong numeral obliterator nor datestamp were available. The manuscript numeral is not recorded by Freeman, and the Type 1 and Type 2 numerals are both rated RRRRR

    Estimate: $250 Realised Price : $190

    1853 (14 Sep) cover to Dublin franked with 2d Ultramarine Plate I Laureate (four margins) and 3d Dull Yellow-green Laureate (touched to large margins) tied by Sydney barred obliterator, endorsed 'first opportunity' and 'Per Victoria', Sydney, London and Dublin backstamps, and with mss'8(d)' due as an incoming ship letter. Slight soiling, otherwise fine and an unusual rating as 3d was the correct ship letter rate from Sydney, 5d representing the country rate of 2d + 3d ship letter

    1855 (13 Sep) cover to Neston, Cheshire (subsequently redirected to Birkenhead) franked with 2d Prussian Blue on Bluish Plate III Laureate strip of 3 and singles (x 3) tied by Type 1A '105' numerals (Bendemeer, rated RRR, but mostly illegible), and with 'AUSTRALIAN/PAID/LIVERPOOL/PACKET' cds and '5(d)' accountancy handstamp, both in red. Backstamps of Bendemeer and Sydney, plus Chester (2, one in blue), Neston and Birkenhead (both in green). Stamps with some faults including pinholes and cover with some soiling and small peripheral faults, but an attractive franking and a very early date (? earliest) for the Plate III unwatermarked 2d Laureate

    1855 (22 Dec) cover franked with 6d Slate-green Imperf Diadem (three good margins, touched at lower left) cancelled Sydney barred obliterator, Sydney despatch backstamp, and with 'AUSTRALIAN/PAID/LIVERPOOL/PACKET' cds, London arrival cds and '5'(d) accountancy handstamp, all in red. Endorsed 'pr. Lightning' and a fine clipper cover

    Estimate: $180 Realised Price : $210

    1857 (10 Apr) cover to Springfield Mills, U.K. franked with 1/- Rosy-vermilion Imperf Diadem (three large margins, just touched at left) tied by Sydney barred obliterator, and endorsed 'pr. Columbian via Marseilles'. With Sydney despatch and Huddersfield arrival backstamps. Wax seal on reverse cut out, otherwise a fine example of the ½ ounce Marseilles rate, carried on the 4th homeward voyage of the European & Australian Royal Mail contract

    Estimate: $200

    1857 (28 Sep) entire to London franked 6d Greyish-brown Imperf Diadem cancelled (and just tied) by '92' in rays (Casino, rated RRR) and endorsed 'By E&A RMC Ship Simla', with Casino despatch and Sydney transit backstamps, and London arrival cds on face. Very fine, and carried on the 9th homeward voyage of the European & Australian Royal Mail contract

    Estimate: $150 Realised Price : $130

    1858 (10 Jul) cover to London franked 6d Grey Imperf Diadem (four close to large margins) tied by Sydney duplex, with London arrival cds in red on reverse. Repaired vertical tear at left, however of very fine appearance. Carried on the 18th homeward voyage of the European & Australian Royal Mail contract (per 'Emeu')

    Estimate: $200

    1858 (10 Dec) cover from Sydney to London with 6d Greenish-grey Imperf Diadem (very fine with four good to large margins) tied by 'N.S.W.' in ovals and endorsed 'pr Columbian', carried on the 23rd homeward voyage of the European & Australian Royal Mail contract. Couple of small stains at top of envelope, otherwise very fine

    1859 (29 Jan) entire to Melbourne franked with 6d Grey Imperf Diadem (three margins, touched at base) tied by Sydney duplex and endorsed 'City of Sydney', with Sydney despatch backstamp and 'SHIP LETTER/FREE/G.P.O. VICTORIA' ds in red on reverse, fine

    1861 (16 Feb) cover to Langholm, Scotland with 6d Purple Diadem Perf 13 tied by Sydney duplex, and 1871 (27 Jan) cover to London with 6d Violet Diadem Perf 13 tied by Sydney duplex, with appropriate arrival datestamps, some peripheral toning on former, otherwise a fine pair (2 covers)

    1861 (18 Jun) entire from 'Rockgidgul via Murrurundi' to Alness, Scotland with perforated 2d Greenish Blue Diadems (x 3) tied by '69' ray type numerals (rated R), with backstamps for Murrurundi and Sydney, and Inverness arrival cds (AU 22 61), very fine

    1863 (Oct) outer to Melbourne bearing uncancelled 6d Purple Diadem Perf 13, endorsed 'p Rangatira' and with mss '2' in black, backstamped Melbourne arrival cds in red OC 12 63. Without any N.S.W. markings and apparently posted shipside or on board ship,unusual

    1863 (19 Oct) cover from Sydney to Langholm, Scotland, franked 6d Diadem and 2d De La Rue pair cancelled Sydney duplex, backstamped Carlisle transit cds and Langholm arrival cds (DE 15 63). Short tear in base of envelope, otherwise a fine example of the 10d via Marseilles rate

    1867 (1 Aug) cover to Hexham, Northumberland franked with 6d Purple Perf 13 Diadem tied by Sydney duplex, endorsed 'Via Panama' with London transit cds on face, and Hexham arrival cds on reverse. Some staining (largely limited to the back) and of fine appearance

    1868 (27 Mar) cover to Yorkshire with 6d Purple Diadem Perf 13 tied by Sydney duplex (flap faults and tear at lower left), and 1870 (18 May) cover to Westmoreland with 2d De La Rue strip of 3 cancelled '20' in rays (Liverpool) (back flap missing) (2 covers)

    1868 (20 Apr) cover to Birmingham franked with 6d Purple Perf 13 Diadems (x 2) cancelled '36' in rays (Braidwood Type 3R16, rated RRR), with Braidwood despatch cds on face, and Sydney transit and Birmingham arrival cds on reverse. Small cover faults and with some staining

    1868 (16 Jul) cover to Belfast franked with 6d Purple Perf 13 Diadems (x 3) tied by Sydney duplexes, with 'DUBLIN BELFAST/R.P.O.' backstamp. Flap faults and some peripheral creases and stains but a scarce triple rate cover

     

    Lot 44

    1875 (20 Oct) cover from Gundagai to Paterson, New Jersey, with 1871-84 6d Lilac tied by \'46\' rays type numeral, and with 30mm \'PAID ALL\' circular handstamp in red. Gundagai despatch and Sydney transit cds on reverse, and \'SAN FRANCISCO/PAID ALL\' transit cds in red on face. Few tears at top of envelope and with flap defect

    1878 (30 Jan) cover from Orange to 'C.F. Adams/Importer & Dealer in Postage Stamps/Cincinnati/Ohio/USA', oval 'PAID ALL' in violet, San Francisco Paid All cds on front, Orange, Sydney and arrival cds on reverse. A very early Colonial stamp collector item

    1881 (14 Jul) cover to Hamburg with 5d Diadem pair and single (SG 160) and 1d DLR (SG 191) tied by Sydney duplexes, endorsed \'via San Francisco\' with London transit cds in red and Hamburg arrival ds (28 8 81) on reverse. Portion of back flap missing, otherwise of fine appearance and a scarce double rate

    1889 (15 Apr) cover from Nowra to New York with 6d Carmine Centennial tied '278' numeral, and with oval 'PAID ALL' in violet, Sydney and New York backstamps, fine

    1889 (27 Jul) mourning cover to New York with 2d Emu (3) tied by Murrurundi \'69\' duplexes, and with 30mm \'PAID ALL\' handstamp in violet. New York arrival ds on reverse, small flap defects otherwise fine

     

    Lot 49

    1891 (23 Feb) cover from Sydney to New York with 2d Emu strip of 3 tied by Sydney duplex, and by 30mm \'PAID ALL\' in circle in black, and with New York arrival bs (MAR 24 91), fine. The postal treaty provided that the \'PAID ALL\' handstamp was to be applied in red, and this cover is one of only about four examples recorded in black

     

    Lot 50

    1891 (11 Aug) cover to St. Louis, Missouri, with 6d Carmine Centennial tied by Sydney duplex, and with 30mm circular \'PAID ALL\' handstamp unusually in black (about four recorded), with \'SAN FRANCISCO/PAID ALL\' cds and \'ST. LOUIS & Co. BLUFFS R.P.O.\' double circle ds in violet on reverse. Slightly soiled, otherwise fine

    1902 (4 Aug) registered cover to Mulhouse, Germany with philatelic franking of the current set of adhesives up to 12½d (comprising ½d, 1d, 2d, 2½d, 3d, 4d, 5d, 6d, 7½dm on 6d, 8d, 9d on 10d, 10d, 1/- and 12½d on 1/-) tied by registered cds, addressee's origin on back flap is given as New Caledonia, fine and attractive

    1908 (2 Dec) long envelope from the Linnean Society of New South Wales to Munich with 8d Magenta Centennial (SG 344) tied by Sydney cds, with manuscript endorsement 'Per G.M.S. "Bremen" ', and faint arrival backstamp. A scarce solo usage, with the additional attraction of being sent via the German mail line

    1911 (4 Jul) registered cover (flap fault) from stamp dealer Fred Hagen, Sydney to U.K. bearing legitimate franking of South Australia 1d and Western Australia 6d, unusual dark brown and black registration label, reverse with the famous Hagen Cinderella incorporating image of 'Sydney View' 1d
