Lot 1110		Estimate: $120 1842 (14 Mar) outer Sydney to London 'p Chatham' rated '6'd for a double ship letter and '1/4'd double inwards charge file folds overall toned and 1842 (11 Oct) folded entire Sydney to London 'per Lady Raffles' similarly rated. Contents written by the Flower Salting & Co concerning the shipment of 56 bales of wool valued at £880/10/0d. Few file folds and moisture damage. (2)
Lot 1111		Estimate: $120 Realised Price : $90 1843 (27 Jan) entire Sydney to Edinburgh 'p Columbian', the rear with Liverpool octagon ship letter marking and arrival cds in red. Rated '6'd pre-paid as a double ship letter and '8'd due on arrival as a private ship letter. Contents written by Brown & Co concerning the greatly overstocked market and goods of an unsaleable description. Very fine
Lot 1112		Estimate: $400 Realised Price : $525 1843 (13 Feb) entire Port Macquarie to London sent per the ‘Eagle’ (which carried 32 invalids of the 28th & 30th regiments) and bearing Port Macquarie 'PAID' marking, oval cds and Sydney transit markings on face. Rated '7'd pre-paid inland ship letter rate and '8'd inwards ship letter due. Contents written by George Smith (1799-1862) transported as a convict in 1832 and pardoned 10 years later. At the time of writing Smith was the Sheriff's Bailiff in Muswellbrook. File folds otherwise fine
Lot 1113		Estimate: $150 1843 (20 May) outer Sydney to London sent by the 'Caledonea' rated '9'd triple ship letter rate yet double '1/4'd double inwards charge. 'SHIP LETTER' and arrival cds on rear. Few folds and blemishes and 1843 (27 May) part entire Sydney to London sent by the 'Harlequin' with 'SHIP LETTER' and arrival cds on rear. Rated '3'd ship letter rate and '8'd inward charge. The front with DEVIZES cds and handstamped 'Grays Inn/1D PAID' representing the redirection fee to Wiltshire. The writer, Francis Halked, aged 39, states that his Captain keeps good table, at present fair wines and that the vessel is fitted up for passengers like the 'Neptune' on a smaller scale
Lot 1114		Estimate: $400 Realised Price : $300 1843 (20 May) large part entire written at Wandsworth, New England (near Tamworth) to London with Sydney ship letter handstamp on the face and rated 'pd 1/5'd and '8'd arrival charge. Written by Francis Halked who states that the Bank of Australia seems to have been in the hands of the aristocracy and supposed to be the most secure. He also states that Captain Hamilton is to form a new cattle station on the Richmond River. Small stains and tiny tears

Lot 1116		Estimate: $500 Realised Price : $380 1843 (17 July) entire written at Sydney and carried privately to Ireland. Struck with the framed Ship Letter handstamp on the front and rated '8'd inwards charge. Contents (typed transcript included) state "This is a very butiful(sic) country but is in a very miserable state now". "I see thasands(sic) of convicts every day in chains". Rather grubby and internally damaged and repaired
Lot 1117		Estimate: $100 1843 (10 Jul) small wrapper Sydney to Bathurst struck with the framed 'POST PAID/AT SYDNEY' and b/s Sydney GPO datestamp. Rated '9'd for a letter carried 80-120 miles under the 1835 Act. Heavily stained however the letter is endorsed by Thomas Walker (1804-86) member (for Port Philip) of the Legislative Council of NSW and who signed the 1845 petition for separation from NSW. The contents state "...when you have occasion to write to me, address T.W; M.C. and I shall get your letter free of postage....". Also included is photocopy of the NSW Government Gazette with a notice from Sydney GPO dated 11.7.1843 that letters from members of the Legislative Council should have "....M.C. being added to (their) Superscription" to avoid postage. An interesting and direct association to privileged mail
Lot 1118		Estimate: $250 Realised Price : $360 1843 (11 Aug) OHMS outer Sydney to Wollongong endorsed and sent by the Treasury to the Police Magistrate, Captain Patrick Plunkett. Few peripheral faults though a good example of free official mail
Lot 1119		Estimate: $5,000 Realised Price : $3,800 1843 (12 Dec) folded printed matter Sydney to Bathurst (b/s 15.12.1843) the face with circular 'CROWN/FREE/DE*12/1843' marking and endorsed by the sender who was entitled to free postage. A few blemishes and small tear though an exceptionally rare example of non-letter rate privileged mail. The contents are a speech given to the NSW Legislative Council on 31.10.1843 by Rev Dr John Dunmore Lang D.D. concerning judicial matters and sent by him to George Ranken J.P. (1793-1860); one of the earliest recipients of Government land in Bathurst in 1822 and one of the earliest committee members of the Royal Agricultural Society following his success as a cheesemaker. Lot 1120		Estimate: $150 Realised Price : $115 1844 (17 May) entire 'per Penyard Park' Sydney to England rated '6'd double ship letter rate and '1/4' double inwards charge. The reverse with London and Chipping Norton cds. Writer refers to the downturn in trade in horse blankets and clothing and that horses once selling for £40 to £70 can now be obtained for £8 to £15. Rear torn and repaired otherwise fine
Lot 1121		Estimate: $300 Realised Price : $320 1844 (21 Oct) part entire sent by the 'Greenlaw' to London and redirected to Windlesham. Struck with the framed 'PAID AT/ARMIDALE' handstamp and cds and Sydney paid transit cds. Rated '2/10'(d) pre-paid and '8'(d) inwards ship letter on arrival. The rear with three English transit or arrival cds. The writer, Francis Halked, refers to his extensive loss of sheep and the removal of the wool from the skins of 350 or 400 dead sheep. Fine
Lot 1122		Estimate: $2,000 1844 (8 Nov) OHMS outer and sent without Colonial postage from Sydney to London 'per Thos Lowry' and rated '1/4'd for a double inwards ship letter rate. London arrival cds on rear. Routed via St Helena, the ship struck a sunken rock(s) upon arrival in Dartmouth when in charge of the pilot. The mail was recovered with little delay but the pilot committed suicide the next day. A new discovery with mail unrecorded by Peace (1997) at page 17. File folds and few minor stains, however an important wreck cover and possibly unique
Lot 1123		Estimate: $200 Realised Price : $150 1845 (2 Jan) entire Sydney to England send by the 'Templar' rated '3'd ship letter rate and '8'd inwards ship letter rate due. Arrival cds on rear. The 'Templar' carried the Earl and Countess of Limerick on this journey. The writer states that "money is frequently lent on mortgage at 6%". Clean and fine. Also 1845 (11 Jan) entire Sydney to England 'per Perlongee Bomangee' rated '6' double ship letter rate and '1/4'd double inwards ship letter rate due. London and Chipping Norton cds on rear. The contents refer to the return of unsold remainders of horse blankets and woollen kersey, etc. Typed transcript included. Fine (2)
Lot 1124		Estimate: $400 Realised Price : $650 c1845 outer Dapto to Wollongong with unclear despatch ds of Dapto on rear of 1.9.184? (it would appear that the last numeral in the year was permanently absent, either deliberate or by mishap, as the other known examples appear similar), rated and pre-paid '4'(d) representing the inland rate not exceeding a distance of 15 miles. Very scarce local mail from a southern regional area and a total of four strikes of the Dapto datestamp believed to exist

Lot 1127		Estimate: $200 Realised Price : $210 1845 (1 Feb) OHMS outer from the Colonial Treasury, Sydney to Wollongong and struck with the circular 'CROWN/FREE/FE*1/1845' handstamp (PHNSW Type F6). A few stains and small tone spots though an attractive example of this marking
Lot 1128		Estimate: $250 Realised Price : $190 1845 (9 Mar) outer Sydney to London 'p Clara' rated '9'd triple ship letter rate and '1/4d' double inwards charge, London arrival cds on rear and the contents entirely in German. Also 1845 (11 Jul) part entire Sydney to London rated '3'd ship letter rate and '8'd inwards charge. Letter mentions that "Dr (Robert) Ross (1792-1862) has been informed by the Captain of the vessel who delivered this letter that the 'John Williams' left eight native preachers at Sandwich Island"; and 1848 (28 Jan) outer Sydney to London rated '3'd ship letter rate and '1/-' inwards packet rate and carried on the 'Hamlet'. All with file folds otherwise fine (3)
