    Used and duplicated selection of imperforate Diadems comprising 1d (39 - inc six pairs, a strip of three and one perforated), 3d (17 - inc a pair and one on piece), 5d (2) 6d (37 - inc two pairs, one wmk inverted, one wmk '8' and another with 1981 APS Certificate) and 1/- (21 - one from right of sheet with large margin and two wmk '8'). Very fine to poor with an excellent range of shades (99)

    Estimate: $12,000

    Die Proofs on thick card comprising 1d in Deep Scarlet (55 x 70mm), 2d in Deep Blue (57 x 77mm), 3d in Bright Green (58 x 73mm), 5d in Violet (70 x 57mm), 8d in Red-brown (68 x 52mm) and 1/- in Rose-Carmine (55 x 69mm), occasional minor surface marks, otherwise superb Said to have been pulled by De La Rue for the 1867 Paris Exhibition (or perhaps the 1872 South Kensington Exhibition), it has been stated that three sets of proofs were pulled. The set offered here is from the Dr W.R.D. Wiggins Collection; a second set is in the British Library and a third set (on thin wove paper and cut down to framelines at sides) was in the Hutson Collection. Magnificent showpiece proofs

    1d Orange-red error 'Printed Both Sides' unused without gum showing strong misplaced impression on reverse, with black mark towards base. The only recorded unused example of this error of which a total of only three are recorded, one of the used examples being in the Royal Collection. Ex Hutson and 'Manwood', with 1932 RPSL Certificate

    1d Orange-vermilion Diadem vertical pair experimental roulette by James Dutton in 1856, large part o.g the lower unit pinholes where once attached to a document. Rare. Ex Frankenstein

    2d Blue block of 22 with large part o.g., touched or cut into in places but with excellent colour, light creases and some minor gum stains on reverse. An exceptional and rare multiple, ex Frankenstein

    2d Plate I Retouched: First Retouch - 2d Dull Blue [24, lines above and below 'TWO PENCE' redrawn], and Deep Dull Blue pair [103-104, 104 with extensive re-drawing of Diadem, hair and at base of neck]; Third Retouch - 2d Dull Blue horizontal pair [35-36, [36] retouched to left and right of 'SOUTH' and above 'WALES']; 2d Cobalt Blue [49, retouched above 'NEW' and left of 'SOUTH'], [104, showing very extensive redrawing of right side panels and background to head] (2, used at Wagga Wagga and Walgett) and [105, left side panels retouched]. Majority with four margins and mostly fine (9 incl two pairs)

    2d Plate II block of six (2 x 3) from base of the sheet with margins all around and large part o.g. Vertically and horizontally creased and a brown erosion hole in the second unit nevertheless it is the largest recorded multiple. An outstanding exhibition piece. Ex Ginger, Morten-Bond, Amundsen, Shepherd and 'Manwood'. RPSL Certificate (1959)

    Lithographic Transfer of Plate I: 2d Pale Blue, SG 118, very large margins all round, cancelled by 'NSW' in concentric ovals, surface abrasion in top margin clear of design, nevertheless an exceptional example. Ex 'Manwood'. 1955 BPA Certificate

    Lithographic Transfer of Plate I: 2d Pale Blue used example cancelled '55' (Newcastle) ray type, margins except where touching at top and slightly into at top right. An acceptable example of this scarce stamp. SG 118 Cat £750

    Lithographic Transfer of Plate I: 2d Pale Blue horizontal pair with close to good margins, just touched top right and lower left, tied to small piece by Sydney duplexes of SP 1 1859. A fine and very rare multiple ex Hutson and 'Manwood' and illustrated in Hutson's The Stamps of New South Wales on page 34. 1953 RPSL Certificate. SG 118 Cat £1500

    Lithographic Transfer of Plate I: 2d Pale Blue horizontal pair [109-110], both showing retouches to bottom frame, large margins in places, just into at right and top, cancelled ray type '66' of Singleton. Very few examples of these two retouches are recorded and this pair showing both is unique, ex Hutson and 'Manwood' and is illustrated in Hutson's The Stamps of New South Wales on page 34. Arguably the most important 2d lithograph piece extant. SG 118a Cat £5000+

    Lithographic Transfer of Plate I: 2d Pale Blue clear to small margins all round, cancelled by 'NSW' in concentric ovals on 1859 (13 Aug) OHMS outer from Sydney to "Camp/near Gloucester". Sydney despatch and Raymond Terrace and Stroud (AU 16 1859) datestamps on reverse. Light horizontal crease along top (barely affecting the adhesive), also mss notations and peripheral staining. A very rare use of this stamp on cover, with approx eight 2d Lithograph covers recorded, of which this is the earliest known use. Ex Slade Slade

     

    Lot 84

    Lithographic Transfer of Plate I: 2d Pale Blue and 1/- Pale Red (both four-margined) tied by Sydney 'N.S.W.' in concentric ovals duplex on 1859 (14 Aug) entire to Maine, U.S.A. With London PAID ds in red (OC 14 59), '5/N. YORK AM PKT' arrival ds (OCT 26), and mss '8' accountancy mark. Very fine, and the only recorded use of the 2d lithograph on an overseas cover or in combination with another value. Ex Wiggins and 'Manwood'

    6d Imperforate Plate Proof in Dull Brown without watermark, and with portion of 'CANCELLED' obliteration, close top large margins. Position 6 from the block of 6 of these famous specimens prepared in 1861 for presentation to members of the Hill family. Ex 'Manwood' and Jaffe

    8d Die Proof in Black on India paper affixed to card (40 x 41mm) with some toning. A very rare proof ex 'Manwood'

     

    Lot 90
    Estimate: $150 Realised Price : $145

    8d Dull Yellow-orange full margins on three sides, just into at left and clearly cancelled with Sydney cds of DE 22 1855. Thinned toward the base (only visible from rear) however a rare stamp guaranteed not to be cut-down and possibly the earliest dated copy known having only been issued three weeks earlier. SG 97 Cat £1400

    8d Dull Yellow-orange with large to clear margins tied by Sydney 'N.S.W.' duplex on 1860 (20 Oct) entire to London, endorsed 'p Behar via Marseilles', and with arrival d.s. for DE 15 60 on face. Stamp repaired down left side and at base with lower margin added, still a very rare stamp on cover, ex Rod Moreton

     

    Lot 92

    1/- Die Proof in Black on India paper affixed to card (36 x 36mm) with chamfered corners, light staining at foot nevertheless a very rare proof
